What is Green Star Enterprise?

Green Star Enterprise is another one of Jaku Konbit’s programs that engages children, youth and seniors by using the art of community gardening. The program is designed to promote awareness about the importance of growing food in the local community and to foster intergenerational teamwork and cooperation among seniors and the younger generation.

Why do we do this?

  1. Community gardens increase a sense of community ownership and stewardship;
  2. Community gardens foster the development of a community identity and spirit;
  3. Community gardens bring people together from a wide variety of backgrounds;
  4. Community gardens build community leaders.

To increase awareness around healthy eating and related-issues through wholesome food and physical activities for children, youth and seniors within Ottawa while creating a sense of teamwork in the community.

  1. Introduce participants to the knowledge and experience of how food grows via community gardening;
  2. Promote healthy lifestyle through wholesome food, nutrition and physical activities that facilitate the development of leadership skills, teamwork, advocacy and a positive attitude for success;
  3. Foster a meaningful connection between the younger generation and seniors;
  4. Create opportunities for positive and fun social interactions for everyone.

Garden Details:

The Green Star Program runs annually from April – October. During this period, six (6) plots are rented from the City of Ottawa’s Kilborn Allotment Garden. Bed construction begins in April-May. Top soil and compost are delivered on site in June. Seeding and planting begins thereafter in June. A set daily routine and schedule are developed by our adult volunteers. Throughout the summer, volunteer seniors and youth work methodically to develop, maintain and sustain the garden by weeding, grooming and watering the garden and taking care of the property.
